Chenonceau
By Stan Thobemmos - Chenonceaux, France
Straight from a fairytale,Chenonceau Castle is one of the most atypical in the world: built on the remains of an old mill from the XVIth century, it was home for the great personalities of the realm, like Diane de Poitiers or Catherine de Médicis, which caused it to receive the nickname of “Castle of the Ladies”.
During WWI, it served as an hospital for more than 2000 wounded soldiers and became, during the Second World War, one of the only ways between the occupied France and the free France: the river on which it was built, the Cher, served as the boundary line.
